By Tony Edwards – San Jose, CA (Dec 22, 2011) US Soccer Players — Tony looks at National Team players in the German Cup, the breakout MLS player, and is pleased Toronto fans won鈥檛 have to shiver during the CONCACAF Champions League game.

Which MLS team in the CONCACAF Champions League is skipping all the MLS Preseason 鈥楾ournaments鈥?

Seattle. While Los Angeles and Toronto are headed to exotic places such as Orlando and Tucson for preseason tournaments with other MLS, American, and international teams, the Sounders are preparing for their March 7th first leg against Santos Laguna. Los Angeles and Toronto, of course, face each other in another CCL quarterfinal.

If you want to get tickets for that Toronto-LA game, are you sitting outdoors or indoors?

SkyDome. While all the clich茅s about each team having to play in the same conditions are true, you can make a case that not having the game potentially affected by the weather is the right call. Now, they have a few months to get the field surface right.

Do we care about the German Cup (the DfB Pokal) this year?

We do. Hoffenheim, with Fabian Johnson and Daniel Williams are in the last eight, with their 2-1 win over Augsburg.  As with all things German soccer, Bayern Munich historically does well in the competition.  They’re still in, playing VfB Stuttgart in the quarterfinals.  Hoffenheim gets a date with Greuther Furth, the team that knocked out Timmy Chandler’s Nurnberg in the last round.  For those with an interest in garish trophies, take a look at the DFB Pokal Cup.

Who was your 2011 MLS Breakout Player of the Year?

Graham Zusi of Sporting Kansas City. Why MLS decides to release this award during a holiday week is odd, at best.  Zusi finished the 2011 season with 25 starts from 32 games played and scored five goals.  In his previous two seasons with Kansas City, he had a combined total of 32 games played, nine started, and one goal.  A breakout year by any standard then.

If you were in downtown Kansas City yesterday, and went to the Sporting KC last-minute sale, what should you have given as a gift?

The Sporting Club Track jacket, I鈥檓 a medium, if they run true to size. Might not want to put it in the dryer though. Hey, a scarf always works, especially the retro variety.  As much as most of us prefer that retro style, it’s a tough fit for a League that was founded in the bright colors and snazzy patterns of mid-1990’s professional sports.
